Walking and walking

I love walking. Back in Finland I took regular  stick walks (Nordic Walk)  around the river Oulu estuary. The river mouth combines many  little islands and streams which makes it very pleasant  and pretty. The Finns take pride in creating Nordic Walk.  I think that it is just one example of Finnish tendency to be super effective and multi-task when ever possible. You can not just take rolling walks around the city or along numerous beautiful walking paths, you need to walk briskly and  effectively. An there isn't an easier way to get your  hart beat up than  using walking sticks, if you do not want to jog or run.  Please do not get me wrong, I do love stick walking. It is very nice. Especially if you are in the environment where it is a national hobby, where the infrastructure for  nice pedestrian walking paths and effective street lights actually exists and you are not the only person who wants to walk for your health in the streets after 5pm.

I had to change my mindset in England. However much I love stick walking, it is not for me at the moment. I have had to teach myself a concept of leisurely walks.  At the moment walking for me means browsing  around interesting places and enjoying the beauty of the world.  Leisurely walks are  a blessing. They allow me to enjoy and be free of the pressure of being effective. This lesson have been very difficult to learn and I am still learning. There is no need to multi-task or even see  it all at once. It is the element of excitement and unknown which makes my leisure walks so satisfying. The world around us is truly amazing.  And after two or three hours leisurely walks I feel physically tired as well.  So  it must bring some physical heath benefits on the top of charging my spiritual and emotional batteries. I wouldn't have seen these little gems if I would have walked briskly:

My Inner Dancer

I am not a dancer. I have never been and I'm not sure if  I  ever will be. Just a little clarification for our non Finnish readers: Finns love  to dance. And this passion for dancing has grown to the national peculiarities which have profoundly influenced in my relationship with dancing. Let me explain:

The Finnish folk dance. The pride and joy of all primary school spring performances. There are very precise national styles around the country, steps, choreographies and THE right way to do it. The Finnish folk dance tradition has inspired many school teachers to aim for the same perfection in their school plays. However - what did it mean  to me when chosen to do a Christmas Cookie Dance turning around and around on the spot wearing a big brown cardboard circle on my tummy instead of  floating like a Snowflake in  lace tutus. How I envied those snowflakes.

Saturday evening's dance; the national gathering together in early 70's, the first reality TV  show in Finland  hosted by the national star Heikki Hietamies. Everybody after or before Saturday's sauna sat on their bums to watch other people dancing on the telly. Yes, you read it right. On the telly. More than two million people for 15 years spent every Saturday evening watching other people dancing. (It is a massive amount of people in a country whose  total  population is about 5 million.) They say that even cows' milking times were altered because farmers' wives wanted to see this programme. To produce this programme in a truly Finnish way the educational section was included as well. The dance maestro Åke Blomqist taught the steps for the different dances so that the nation learned them THE right way. This video about how to dance  Disco Dance is a classic. So- it is in my nuclear thinking that my role is to admire how other people dance correctly.

Dancing restaurants and lavatanssit are two peculiarities which are a bit difficult to explain to  other nationalities. Dancing restaurant is the restaurant where you go not to eat but to dance. Some of them  might  be regular restaurants in the daytime or early evening and some are purely open just for late night dances. Lavatanssit is the same thing but usually in a  purpose built dancing pavilion either in a town or in the country side. The most popular of them are still those in the countryside and by the river. I believe that the origin to "lavatanssit" is from the agricultural period  when farmers and their families gathered to together  to celebrate the mid summer Sun and to have fun together. Both the traditions e.g.dancing restaurants and lavatanssit still exists and they flourished when I was a teenager.  A teenager who was afraid of two things  which might or might not might occur when you go to dancing places:  a) will anybody come to ask me to dance (yes this is still the tradition!) and b) if so, can I dance this particular dance! What  stress. I am sure that its is not a surprise for anybody reading this far that  visiting dancing restaurants or lavatanssit weren't my favourite hobbies. And I didn't learn to dance as I didn't get the practise.

Finns love Finnish Tango. Not Argentinian or other Latin tradition but their very own Finnish version of tango. They have even a festival for a Finnish Tango, Tangomarkkinat. Which I have never visited. But watch on the telly! Hours and hours of it. Hours and hours were also spent in  high school  to learn vanhojen päivät tanssit The Eldest Dance. Again a peculiar Finnish tradition when young people dance formal dances in a formal way wearing nowadays very formal and expensive costumes. It is a bit like a Prom but for those students who become the eldest at the high school when the last class leaves the school to prepare themselves for matriculation tests. I did  "vanhojen tanssit" as everybody has to do and it was a stress. But also kind of important and fun.

So I have a dilemma:  I am not a dancer but I believe that there is a little dancer inside me. I have seen hours and hours of dancing in my lifetime (on the telly, remember) but have a very little experience of dancing myself. I feel very safe in this county where the bride and groom's first dance is not a waltz like in Finland but a freesyle disco dance. I enjoy seeing funny  Morris dances in the streets and school assemblies where everybody joins together to dance in their own style. Only  Stricly Come Dancing  gives me a little reminder of the past: I am again watching other people dancing on the telly!

I like Zumba -in the English style. The zumba instructor in my gym doesn't bother to give verbal instruction, to name the steps or rehearse the dances. He just points in the air the directions and how many times to do what ever. I am learning by doing and enjoying. Everybody is just smiling and having fun. No pressure no corrections just a great example and a great atmosphere.  Wake y, wake y my inner dancer.

BodyBalance

Ready to Rock and Roll fully equipped for my BodyBalance session. Oh dear it was b-y painful. Those were the days when I was able to do the worrier pose  full of inner power and energy. My today's star is wobbly and  my eagle doesn't want to soar. I am stiff and lost not only my core strength but my flexibility.

I still enjoy it but yearn Golden Old Days in my  gym back to Oulu. Anne was and still is the best BB instructor I have ever come across at any gym. Her sessions were (are)  up to the perfection. These guys here have no chance. I have had to learn that instructors do not usually know the new programme themselves and often stick with the old one they know best.Very rarely  instructors correct and explain  how and why to do poses in correct way. Usually  BB sessions are floppy concentrating more in flexibility and relaxation than pushing to use core muscles and stretching.  And we do not talk about co-ordinating breathing to the movements. I have been in the different gyms here at it has been the same everywhere.

However Balance is always enjoyable. I love the flow of the movements and music. At the end of the day what I get out of my balance sessions is my choice. And the way Sarah led the session yesterday suit my fitness level just fine.

Zen

It was quarter to eight on Sunday morning when I was driving to my gym. On the way I listened to the Aled Jones with Good Morning Sunday. Everything was zen. Aled's faith guest was rabbi Pete Tobias. "..we should treat each new day as an opportunity to learn something new about our world, to gain insight into the forces that guide our lives, to appreciate the miracle of everyday. May this Sunday – may every day – be a day when we might encounter an insight or a truth that will benefit our lives, the lives of those around us and our fragile, beautiful world", he says. I agree with him and feel zen and  have a great peace inside me when I arrive to the gym couple of minutes before eight.

Nobody at the reception. No PT to be seen. I am not worried. Still zen. Waiting, waiting and eventually trying my key card to pass the barrier - it doesn't work. My zen starts to melt away. No PT to be seen and it is almost 10 past eight now. I climb over the barrier and try to enter the weight training hall. My key card doesn't work and the door doesn't open. Zen has almost gone and I am "xxxx off".  To cut this short I found out that somebody has messed up with my booking and this booking error has locked my key card. And due to this my PT has not been aware that I was there. And he hasn't seen any reason to come to find me.

Our conversation is not printable.  My point is that if I have booked my session, paid for it and been at the reception on time, I can expect some personal service for personal training.  There was no zen around me  and I have no PT any more.

What did I do? Perhaps something  what rabbi Tobias said had touched me because I didn't go home as I momentarily wanted but entered the weight training hall. After 20 min on  treadmill, 15 min on cross trainer, 20 min weight lifting and 10 min on treadmill  I had not only burnt 530 kacl but  felt better. It was  fairly easy to find my ex PT and apology my hash words. Zen  was creaping  back as I was driving home.

EDIT: This was supposed to be my VERY first PT session.

Syöminen on psykologiaa

Easy Life Control -painonhallintaryhmässä oli viime viikolla keskusteltu syömisestä psykologisena ilmiönä. En päässyt ryhmätapaamiseen, joten lupasin kertoa ajatukseni blogissa.

Mitä ”syöminen on psykologiaa” tarkoittaa käytännössä?

Askel syömisen hallintaan on tiedostaminen: on tiedostettava, miksi syö.

  • teen viikon ruoat etukäteen pakkaseen sopivan kokoisiin annosrasioihin
Ihanko totta teet näin koko ajan? joku varmasti kysyy.

Syömisen psykologiasta on paljon asiatietoakin olemassa. Esim. tästä linkistä löytyy mielenkiintoisia näkökulmia aiheesta:

Zumba!

When I was driving to the gym I wondered why there are so many cars in the car park and the queue at the reception. My colleague has told that Thursday's Zumba is popular and yes it was! I lasted exactly 2 songs and after that I just did my own things. Boobs and bums everywhere: The hall was packed with ladies  - all sizes, shapes, genders, fit and fat ones happily together.  Great fun. Olé Zumba!

Next week there will be a warden  at the door and only  70 people who have booked their place are allowed in. I will be one them.

As an exercise today was a little on a hard side.
Total time 58 min
Calories burnt 629
HR average 136
On my own zone 11 min
Fat burnt 35%
This just tells how unfit I am. What a great starting point. I am on the bottom pile.

Tools and motivation

It was a bit depressing to read about Merja’s gym programme. It is a fantastic programme and she is so lucky to be able to have such a detailed one from her instructor and from her gym. When I made inquiries about the gyms and their service packets I found out that it is all a bit different here. But I will come back to this later. When I actually get my ass to the gym and eventually meet my PT and start my programme. I am still not well.  After the first hit of various infections and two weeks sick leave I was well for exactly one and a half week.  Since then I have had a sore throat and phlegm sprinkling out. I am not unwell enough to be absent from work but definitely not fit enough to go to the gym.   But back to Merja’s programme: WOW how brilliant it is.

BUT: Hip hip hurrah! During the last month and a half I have learned to control my eating better than before. And funnily enough it hasn’t been even very difficult. It is like when I quit smoking last and the very last time. I was so motivated and clear headed about the whole business that with a little help from my doctor quitting smoking was a piece of cake.  And I think I am using the same strategy now for slimming: the motivation is there and help is in use. The biggest factor is motivation – I just know that I will do it this time. There is no hurry, I am not after quick fixes and I am just positively determined that I will success. The help I need is to be mindful and aware, to realise that I am one of those people who have developed wrong habits and whose relationship to food is close in a wrong way. The tools I am using are PT, gym, periodical food “in take” checks (e.g. Kiloklugi or Kalorilaskuri), Fineli  (to learn more about the quality of food) and blogging. It is inspirational to read about other people’s projects and listen to their advice.
Target
Present intake

I have used Kalorilaskuri now for a week just to check my eating habits. I am not going to get obsessed with this tool as marvellous as it is. It is very easy and quick to use and gives lots and lots of information about the quality of food. (I actually prefer Kalorilaskuri to Kiloklubi which I have used in the past. Well - they both are good, in their own way.) The week’s follow up has highlighted that I am able to keep my calories just under 1500 kcal per day which I have set to be my target. This happens with no big issues; the amount I eat is the amount I want to eat. The possible difficulty might arise when I start to exercise: I will need to eat more and that might bring some challenges.  The biggest issue really is my protein intake which is rarely enough.  I am happy that I am happy with how much and what I eat.

Kuntosaliohjelma

VATSALIHAKSET

Seuraavaksi tein kaikkein rankimman liikkeen eli askelkyykyn Smith-laitteessa.

Tein maanantaina tämän saman liikkeen 3 x 10 x 5 kg. Eli 1,25 kg:n lisäys tangon molempiin päihin (yht. siis 2,5 kg lisää) vaikuttaa huomattavasti. Sitten, kun jaksan tehdä 10 toistoa jokaisessa kolmessa sarjassa 6,25 kg:n painoilla, nostan painot seuraaviin lukemiin.

Aivan erinomaisen tehokas liike. Kantapään vienti edellä aiheuttaa kierron raajaan ja näin saavat reiden loitontajalihasten lisäksi myös pakarat saavat kyytiä. Ja sehän meistä naisista on mukavaa!
Tämän päivän luvut: 3 x 10 x 6,25 kg.

Vuorossa rintalihakset.
Tämän päivän luvut olivat: 3 x 15 x 22,5 kg.

Seuraavalla kerralla nostan painot 25 kiloon ja pyrin tekemään 3 x 10 x 25 kg.

Oikeasti kuvassa oleva dippilaite on paljon korkeampi...

Viimeisen liikkeen tein alataljalla.

- harjoituksen kokonaisaika 68 min.
- kuntoa kohottavalla sykealueella harjoiteltu aika 60 min.
- keskiarvosyke harjoittelun aikana 126
- korkein sykearvo harjoittelun aikana 149
- kulutetut kalorit 482 kcal

Tämä treeni oli rankka, mutta mukava. Uusiksi parin päivän päästä :-)
Ohjelmaan kuuluu muutama muukin liike, mutta nämä riittivät minulle tänään. Ohjelman on laatinut omaohjaajani Oulun Ladies Beauty Centerissä ohjelmalla nimeltä PhysioTools.

New Year's Resolution Number xxxx

I haven't done this very often. I bought a  dress during the last X-mas break in Finland. My  target is to fit in this lovely one in April.  I am dreaming about my new wardrobe.  In the cupboard there are some old trusted friends  which I will take back  in use with celebration.

A woman has never too many shoes, bags and tulip dresses.

Tammikuun raportti

Tavoitteeni on syödä 500 kcal alle peruskulutuksen.

p.s. Maistuisiko kohtuukalorinen pizza?

January review

Exercise:
Health wise it hasn’t been the best start to the New Year: two weeks sick leave because of number of infections like tonsillitis, ear infection, bronchitis and sinusitis. And today, when it was time to start my PT sessions I am poorly again. Where does all that phlegm come from? And sore throat and feeling rotten? So I had to cancel my booking and I heard that my instructor had just been sent home poorly. That’s that then; for a while.

Eating:
What has happened though is that I have been more conscious about what I eat. I have managed to cut down amount of cheese and I do not drink wine at home. My portion sizes are mainly OK. However my weight loss hasn’t been that much; only a bit less than 2 kg in a month.  I am not willing to cut down more calories as my rough guess is that I eat about 1500 kcal per day – some days more and some days less. Perhaps I should do a calorie count for two weeks to see if I am right? Hmmm.

What do I eat then?
Breakfast 7.00 am: 1 Activia natural yoghurt. 1 tbls of walnuts + couple of almonds. 1 small banana. A little bit of other soft fruit as ½ mandarin or 5-7 grapes. 1,5 tbls  of spelt serials. 1,5 dl orange juice. Coffee with milk.
Morning 11.00 am: coffee with milk
Lunch 12.45 pm: Usually 3 dl vegetable soup, orange, 2 hard breads (hapankorppu) with 1 25gr slice of lowfat (17%) cheese OR salad with a tin of tuna and tomatoes + fruit
Afternoon 3.30 pm : a piece of fruit
Dinner some time between 5.30-7.0 pm: something such as quorn or tofu and vegetables. Normal vegetarian dishes like lasagne, tacos, shepherdess’ pie, jacket potatoes, mince sauce etc. and salads.
Evening snack 9pm: Greek Total 0% yoghurt with some fruit.

If I have felt like needing an extra snack I have had a piece fruit or couple of hard breads with low fat Philadelphia cheese.  And yes, every now and then (rarely though) I have had a piece or two of chocolate.

Writing this list now I can see that
-         I might need a mid morning snack (fruit)
-         I need to be careful with my extra snacks
-         again revisit my portion sizes at dinner times

What I am going to do for two weeks now is to write down what I eat. My aim is around 1400 kacls per day.

Level of optimism:
I feel more at ease with my eating and weight los plan. It is a pity that I have been poorly and not been able to start my exercise plan. However the big thing is that I am aware and conscious about what I eat - in  a relaxed way. Generally I feel positive and optimistic. The disappointment of the month is the amount I have lost. Perhaps this just highlights the fact that controlling my eating can not be the only factor for successful weight loss.  I feel better in my body and I do not think that this minimal weight lost is completely water retention. I have drank lots of water though and tea as I feel thirsty when I do not feel well.

Summa Summarum:
Carry on regardless.Keep the rhythm.

Terveysuutisia

Maidossa olevan proteiinin on todettu edistävän laihtumista.
      • Kohta 3. Samaa mieltä, aamiainen auttaa aina.
      • Kohta 4.
